I agree that it's reassuring to think of friends as people who will love you no matter how snarky you are--but, on the other hand, sitcoms tend to seriously push the snark envelope for the sake of humor. I wonder how people would tolerate those characters in real life; after all, I'm sure people like them exist, and I'm sure those people have friends. Definitely something to mull over! Oh my gosh, TV Tropes is alarmingly addictive.

I actually just caught that Friends episode myself, and you make a really interesting point. I agree that it's reassuring to think of friends as people who will love you no matter how snarky you are–but, on the other hand, sitcoms tend to seriously push the snark envelope for the sake of humor. I wonder how people would tolerate those characters in real life; after all, I'm sure people like them exist, and I'm sure those people have friends. Definitely something to mull over!
